Why am I being referred to Advanced Head and Neck Imaging?

Your dentist or physician recommends this state-of-the-art Cone Beam CT imaging to patients where highly detailed visualization of anatomic structures is required for proper diagnosis and treatment. These 3-D images, combined with your health history and thorough clinical examination help assure that you receive the highest quality care.

How long does the appointment take?

The 3-D CT scan images take about 20 seconds to obtain. Most appointments take 30 minutes or less. If you have special instructions, disabilities, or even anxiety, please mention this when scheduling. We will allow extra time to accommodate your needs.

Does it hurt?

No. Some patients may be asked by their referring dentist to wear a specially designed mouth splint if the images will be utitlized for computer-guided dental implant planning. For patients familiar with a standard panoramic machine, the scan will be fairly similar--but with three-dimensional volumetric data!

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

By law, you must have a signed Advanced Head and Neck Imaging referral form from your referring dentist or physician at your appointment. If utilized for dental implant planning, your dentist may provide a scanning prosthesis to be used as well.

Will you bill my insurance?

We ask that all imaging studies be paid for in full on the day of service. Accepted forms of payment include: cash, Check, VISA, and Mastercard. Because Advanced Head & Neck Imaging is an independent imaging center (not a dentist's office), dental or medical insurances will not contract directly with us. However, we will provide you with appropriate dental/medical codes and forms needed for you to obtain possible reimbursement based on your plan's policy. If your policy dictates payment, your insurance will reimburse you directly. By not having several administrative staff dealing with insurance companies, we are able to keep our fees affordable for all our patients. Advance Head & Neck Imaging is not a Medicare provider.

Can I have copies of my records?

All images and photographs are part of your clinical records and therefore will be initially sent within 1-2 days to your referring doctor. You may request copies directly from your referring doctor.

Why do I have to remove my jewelry?

Items such as earrings, necklaces, piercings, and hair clips must be removed before the scan is obtained. These items cause significant interference and disrupt the quality of the data.

Are these images safe?

Yes. One of the distinct advantages of Cone Beam CT imaging versus standard hospital-based CT scans is the decreased radiation dosage and patient-friendly environment. The amount of radiation needed for one of our all-digital scans is about 70% less of a full mouth set of dental x-rays, less than a standard dental panoramic film and equivalent to 2 days of background exposure by living in the United States. We are annually inspected and approved for radiation safety by the state of Minnesota.

Can I bring my children?

We maintain stringent safety guidelines, so we ask that parents not expect to leave children unattended in our reception area. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to their appointment. We will not perform the requested imaged without this consent or without the signed referral form from your doctor.

Do you sterilize your equipment?

We meticulously follow the OSHA and EPA guidelines for sterilization procedures. Our staff is specially trained in dental imaging and photography and can answer any questions that arise the day of your appointment.
